Twenty years after the photographs were taken, the Ayr Advertiser is looking back at a collection of images and stories from late August 2006, offering a snapshot of community life across Ayrshire.
The archive feature asks readers to see who they can recognise in photographs published two decades ago. The images include young people, sports participants, community groups and performers whose activities formed part of the region’s summer calendar.
Young people and community groups
The 2006 Dundonald Holiday Club is featured as a popular summer activity for local youngsters. Another photograph shows members of Delta Company’s girls football team, part of a group of South Ayrshire cadets who completed a week of intensive training at a camp in Wales.
The feature also looks back to Coylton Gala Day, where members of Coylton Tennis Club were photographed running the barbecue. In Drongan, Lesley Boyd is pictured after winning the Ladies Junior Singles title at the Ayr Bowling Week tournament.
Sport, schools and music
Young athletes from Muirhead Primary appear in the collection after taking part in the Troon Summer Athletics programme. The selection also includes the Ayrshire Fiddle Orchestra, pictured in August 2006 as its members began rehearsals for a new season at Kingcase Church in Prestwick.
The photographs provide a record of activities stretching from holiday clubs and gala events to cadet training, bowls, school sport and music rehearsals. For people who were involved, or who recognise friends and family, the feature offers an opportunity to reconnect with local memories from the summer of 2006.
Readers are invited to get involved with the news by sending in their own news and photographs to the Ayr Advertiser.
