02 · Website delivery

Delivery, security and server logs

When a page is requested, we process the IP address and any Cloudflare connection address, time, URL, referrer, browser, device and technical error information. This is needed to deliver the service, diagnose faults, detect abuse and maintain security.

We rely on our legitimate interest in providing a secure and reliable news service and, for requested services, their performance. Data is kept only as long as needed for those purposes, security evidence or legal duties.

03 · First-party audience measurement

Visits, referrals and technical characteristics

We record page views, article reads, searches and newsletter events. Records include the path, referrer domain, time, pseudonymous visitor and session identifiers, IP addresses, user agent, approximate location and network provider, plus browser, device and bot classification. This helps distinguish readers from automated traffic and improve the service.

A random first-party identifier named nh_aid is stored in the browser for up to 365 days. Raw events are normally deleted after 14 days; aggregated daily totals may be kept for up to 24 months. You can delete or block the identifier in your browser settings.

04 · Newsletter

Signup, delivery and unsubscribe

For the newsletter we process your email address, publication, delivery frequency and records of signup, confirmation, delivery and unsubscribe. Signup is activated through a confirmation link. You can change frequency or unsubscribe through the link in every email.

The legal basis is your consent. Active data is retained for the subscription period; limited suppression and consent records may remain afterwards to meet legal obligations.

05 · Advertising

Google AdSense

This publication uses Google AdSense. Google may process device, browser, IP, page and advertising-interaction data and use cookies or similar technologies. Where the law requires it, non-essential advertising technologies may be used only after consent. Choices can be managed through available consent controls, Google advertising settings and your browser.

06 · Service providers

Recipients and international transfers

We use Hetzner for server hosting, Cloudflare for DNS, security, delivery and email, and an IP geolocation provider for approximate audience statistics. Google is also used where advertising is enabled. Providers receive only data needed for their service. Transfers outside the United Kingdom or EEA use applicable adequacy decisions, standard contractual clauses or other permitted safeguards.

07 · Your rights

Access, correction and objection

Subject to the legal conditions, you may request access, correction, erasure, restriction, portability or objection and withdraw consent at any time. You may also complain to the relevant data-protection authority.
