Plans for a £16 million redesign of Burns Statue Square will go before South Ayrshire councillors as they consider how one of Ayr town centre’s best-known landmarks could be transformed.
Elected members are due to discuss the proposals at a full council meeting on Thursday, September 10, following community engagement held in the spring. The project remains subject to planning approval.
What the proposed redesign would include
If approved, the scheme would create what the council describes as a distinct new gateway to Ayr town centre and a welcoming civic space. The design includes public seating and aims to celebrate the square’s heritage by embracing Robert Burns’ love of nature.
The redevelopment would be delivered by Ayrshire Roads Alliance on behalf of South Ayrshire Council. It is the first of 10 major projects intended to transform Ayr town centre.
The project has received £16m from the UK Government’s Local Regeneration Fund. The funding comes with a condition that it cannot be used in conjunction with any other project.
Changes following public feedback
Feedback from the spring engagement has led to revised designs. These include more greenery and a stronger local identity, reflecting public calls for the square to feel less dominated by traffic and more connected to its surroundings.
Traffic flow and parking plans have also been updated. The proposals include improved accessibility and loading bays for businesses, while changes have been made so the contractor will work closely with affected businesses to minimise disruption during the project.
The plans follow a call earlier this month from Kyle and Carrick Civic Society for a conservation-led approach to the future of Burns Statue Square.
Why the square is being redesigned
Burns Statue Square has been a place of civic pride and a defining Ayr town-centre landmark since its development in the early nineteenth century. At present, it functions as a traffic-dominated roundabout, with the Burns Statue and War Memorial isolated from surrounding streets and the A70 running through it.
The proposed design would turn the square into a more welcoming destination and create an environment for residents, visitors and businesses to enjoy. Councillors will consider the report and the feedback received through the engagement process before deciding whether the proposals should proceed.
