Several significant criminal cases linked to Ayrshire have been heard in court over the past week, including the sentencing of a man who seriously injured another person in Ayr and a forthcoming trial involving a fatal road crash.
The cases were covered by the Ayr Advertiser in a weekly round-up spanning Ayr Sheriff Court, Kilmarnock Sheriff Court and the High Court in Glasgow. The proceedings involved allegations and convictions ranging from serious violence and sexual offending to drug production and a fatal collision.
Two-year sentence for Heathfield Road assault
Robert Gibson, 39, was jailed for two years after being found guilty of assaulting a man to his severe injury and permanent disfigurement.
The Auchinleck man appeared at Ayr Sheriff Court for sentencing after the court heard that he repeatedly punched the victim on the head. The assault took place at an address on Heathfield Road on January 2, and the victim fell to the ground during the attack.
Gibson had claimed he acted in self-defence. The source report also said the court heard he had been drinking before the incident.
Sex-offender cases return to Ayr Sheriff Court
Steven Telfer, 48, returned to Ayr Sheriff Court after admitting that he breached police notification requirements. The report said he had been placed on the sex offenders register indefinitely.
Telfer had previously been jailed after more than 500 indecent photographs and 377 moving images were found on a mobile phone at his flat in Maybole. The latest hearing concerned the breach of his notification requirements, rather than a new allegation involving indecent images.
Another sex-offender case involved Connor Hendren, 31, who was spared prison after pleading guilty to attempting to send a written sexual message to someone he believed was a 14-year-old boy. The person was in fact an undercover police officer.
The report said Hendren also admitted discussing sexual subjects and acts for the purpose of obtaining sexual gratification or humiliating, distressing or alarming the person he believed he was contacting.
Other Ayrshire cases covered
At Kilmarnock Sheriff Court, Vilson Gjinaj, 30, pleaded guilty to one charge after being found inside a cannabis production site in Saltcoats. The court heard that the Albanian national had been trapped inside the Canal Street property for two days when police raided it. He is awaiting sentence, and the site was described in the report as a £1 million cannabis farm.
Akshay Kumar was jailed for five years and two months after being convicted of raping a woman at his flat in Irvine. The 29-year-old, who was married, was arrested shortly before he was due to board a one-way flight out of the UK. The report said he had remained in the country after his visa expired and had been described as a person of interest to the Home Office.
The High Court in Glasgow also featured in the weekly court coverage. James Graham, of Ayr, is due to stand trial over a fatal crash on the A737 in Howwood, Renfrewshire, on September 23, 2024.
Graham is accused of killing Lesley McTear, 59, of Dreghorn, who was a passenger in a Mercedes A-Class involved in the head-on collision. The allegation is that Graham was driving a van at 75mph in a 50mph limit in darkness and poor visibility. The source report did not state a date for the trial.
All defendants are entitled to the protections of the Scottish criminal justice process, including the presumption of innocence where allegations have not resulted in a conviction.
