Ayr GP walk-in service plans move forward — but final approval is still needed

Plans for a new GP walk-in service in Ayr have moved a step closer after NHS Ayrshire & Arran’s proposal was selected for further development under the Scottish Government’s national scheme.

The proposal is part of a wider plan covering Ayr, Kilmarnock and Irvine. The pilot is intended to give people more timely access to primary care and provide support closer to home.

What is being proposed?

The scheme will explore different ways of delivering care so people can access the right support in the right place and at the right time. The plans cover walk-in services in the three Ayrshire locations, including Ayr.

Erik Sutherland, interim director of the East Ayrshire Health and Social Care Partnership, welcomed the decision and said the selection represented an important stage in improving access to primary care across the area.

“We are delighted that the proposals for GP walk-in services in Kilmarnock, Irvine, and Ayr have been selected for further development by the Scottish Government.”

He added that NHS Ayrshire & Arran would continue working with the Scottish Government and local partners to refine how the services would operate and ensure the proposals met the needs of local communities.

When could the Ayr service begin?

The proposal has not received final approval. NHS Ayrshire & Arran must first develop a detailed business case and complete the required assurance processes.

Further planning will include the design of the service, workforce requirements, arrangements for putting the scheme into operation and methods for evaluating its effectiveness.

If approval is secured, the pilot period is expected to run until the end of the 2028/29 financial year. The final timetable and operating arrangements for Ayr will depend on the outcome of the remaining development and approval work.

NHS Ayrshire & Arran said it would work with the Scottish Government and local health partners as the proposals progress. For Ayr residents, the development could eventually provide another way to access primary care, although no final service model has yet been confirmed.
