A familiar figure in Ayr’s dance community has retired after more than five decades examining students for the Royal Academy of Dance (RAD).
Karen Gage stepped down from the role after 56 years. During that time, she examined thousands of dance students across the world, according to the Ayr Advertiser.
A long connection with dance in Ayr
Ms Gage is also known locally as the former owner and principal of Dansarena. The studio became a recognisable part of Ayr’s dance community after she and her husband, Dennis Gage, bought the former Cathcart Church at 9 Fort Street from the Church of Scotland in 1984.
The Grade 2 listed building was transformed into dance studios, creating the premises associated with Dansarena and its work in the town.
Tribute from the Royal Academy of Dance
RAD Scotland announced Ms Gage’s retirement and paid tribute to her contribution as an examiner. The organisation highlighted the number of years she spent assessing dancers and the students she encountered internationally.
“Massive congratulations to Scottish examiner Karen Gage as she retires from examining for the RAD after 56 years - what an incredible number of years! Wishing Karen and husband Dennis a very happy retirement and thank you for examining thousands and thousands of students all over the world over the last 6 decades.”
The retirement marks the end of a career that connected Ayr’s local dance scene with students and examinations around the world.
