A man who admitted a series of violent assaults against the same woman in Maybole and Ayr has been jailed for 30 months.
Mark Reilly admitted assaulting the woman at an address in Society Street, Maybole, on December 31, 2025. The assault included urinating on her body, repeatedly striking her on the head with a glass bottle or similar implement, repeatedly punching her on the head and body, and repeatedly pushing her on the body. The offences caused her severe injury.
Reilly, aged 47, was sentenced at Ayr Sheriff Court. He was also ordered to remain under a supervised release order for 12 months after his custody sentence and was made subject to a three-year non-harassment order.
Further incident in Ayr
The court heard that Reilly assaulted the same woman at Premier Stores on Main Street, Ayr, on March 20 this year. He admitted repeatedly pursuing her and pushing her on the body, dragging her along the ground and repeatedly pushing her into a bus stop. These offences also caused injury.
The charges were aggravated by abuse of a partner or ex-partner. Not guilty pleas to further charges were accepted by the prosecutor.
Reilly also admitted behaving in a threatening or abusive manner during an incident on January 21, 2026, and while travelling to Saltcoats police office. He allegedly shouted, swore and made threats towards officers. At the time of sentencing, he was an inmate at HMP Kilmarnock.
Judge describes assault as particularly awful
Defence solicitor Ian Gillies told the court that Reilly accepted a custodial sentence was inevitable. He referred to the relationship as “toxic” and said both parties had been dealing with alcohol and drug addictions, while stressing that the offending was particularly deplorable.
“He accepts the inevitability of your lordship’s disposal. It is a despicable crime.”
Mr Gillies said Reilly’s addiction was primarily to alcohol and that he had only recently begun using drugs. He also warned that Reilly accepted he could face longer sentences if he returned to the same behaviour after release.
Sheriff Thorley said there was no alternative to a custodial sentence and that Reilly had been given time in custody to reflect. The sheriff described the Maybole assault as being of a “disgusting nature”, referring to the urination and the use of a broken bottle.
“The photo was truly awful. How someone could do that in a relationship, I do not know.”
Reilly’s 30-month sentence was backdated to March 23.
