A mother and daughter from Ayr have been cleared of assault allegations after their trial collapsed at Ayr Sheriff Court.
Gillian Montgomerie, 41, and Lucy Montgomerie, 20, were both found not guilty when prosecutors stopped seeking convictions. The pair had faced charges involving assault, including assault to injury, and possession of an offensive weapon.
Allegations linked to Lochlea Drive
Gillian Montgomerie was accused of assaulting a 17-year-old girl in Lochlea Drive on May 4, 2026. The allegation stated that she broke a glass bottle over the teenager’s head, causing her to fall to the ground.
It was further claimed that Gillian Montgomerie sat astride the girl, pulled her hair and repeatedly struck her on the head with her hands. She also faced an allegation of possessing a glass bottle as an offensive weapon in a public place, without reasonable excuse or lawful authority.
Lucy Montgomerie was accused of assaulting another 17-year-old girl by pulling her hair and dragging her to the ground. Prosecutors alleged that she repeatedly struck the teenager on the head with her hands, causing injury.
Trial evidence and bail conditions
Both women were from Lochlea Drive and had been granted bail subject to special conditions. These required them not to approach or contact the complainers or another individual, and not to enter addresses in Maidens or Lochside, Ayr.
When the pair appeared for trial on September 1, they relied on the special defence of acting in self-defence. Prosecutors led some evidence before both women were acquitted.
The Crown is no longer seeking a conviction. The result means neither Gillian nor Lucy Montgomerie was found guilty of the allegations brought against them.
