A dog rescue charity based in Ayr is preparing to bring its annual Big Wag fundraiser back to Muirmill Equestrian Centre near Symington next month.
Saving and Rehoming Strays will host the event on Sunday, September 13, bringing together dog owners, supporters and their four-legged companions for an afternoon of games, activities and fundraising. The event will run from 12pm to 3pm.
Entry costs £5 per person, while dogs can attend free of charge. Organisers are inviting local dog lovers to take part in what has become the charity’s annual fun dog event and fundraising day.
What visitors can expect at the Big Wag
The programme will include a fun dog show featuring a range of categories and prizes. Visitors and their dogs will also be able to take part in doggy games and other activities during the afternoon.
Alongside the dog-focused entertainment, the event will include stalls and shopping, doggy caricatures, cakes and refreshments. Prize draws and games will provide further opportunities for visitors to support the charity while enjoying the day.
Last year’s Big Wag attracted more than 100 people and over 50 dogs. Saving and Rehoming Strays is hoping this year’s event will be even bigger.
Fundraising for rescue dogs
For the Ayr charity, the event is more than a day out for pets and their owners. Founder Claire Revis said fundraising events are vital to the small rescue because the money raised helps meet the everyday costs of caring for dogs.
“As a small rescue, fundraising events like The Big Wag are incredibly important to us.”
Revis said every pound raised would go towards the dogs in the charity’s care, including food, veterinary treatment, medication and other costs involved in helping them get a second chance.

The event will be held indoors, which Revis said would mean visitors would not need to be concerned about Scotland’s unpredictable weather.
“The event is also indoors, so visitors don't even need to worry about the unpredictable Scottish weather.”
About Saving and Rehoming Strays
Saving and Rehoming Strays was incorporated as a charity four years ago. Revis, however, has been rescuing dogs from Romania for more than a decade.
The organisation is based in Ayr and can have up to 50 dogs at its rescue centre at any one time. It also has a lengthy waiting list, underlining the ongoing demand for its work.
