People across Ayr are set to gain access to a new GP-led walk-in service, with proposals now being developed as part of the Scottish Government’s wider rollout of same-day healthcare centres.
The planned Ayr service is part of an announcement covering 24 additional areas across Scotland. Once those locations are included, the number of walk-in centres planned or already operating will rise to 40.
What the proposed Ayr service would offer
The pilot is testing different ways for people to access same-day care from GPs, advanced nurse practitioners and other clinicians. The aim is to make medical help available at a wider range of times than conventional GP appointment arrangements.
According to the announcement, the centres will operate from 12pm to 8pm, seven days a week. The service is intended to help patients obtain the care they need while easing demand on GP practices and hospital A&E departments.
The announcement does not give an opening date for the Ayr centre, identify its premises or set out how appointments and walk-in access will work locally. It confirms only that proposals for a service in Ayr are in development.
MSP welcomes Ayr announcement
Siobhian Brown, MSP for Ayr, Prestwick and Troon, welcomed the plans. She said she had campaigned for a walk-in centre to come to Ayr and described its potential impact on local access to medical care as significant.
“The opening of a new walk-in GP clinic in Ayr will be a total game changer for people across Ayr.”
Ms Brown also linked the proposal to the wider political commitment to move away from the pressure of seeking GP appointments at 8am. She said more than 10,500 walk-in cases had been seen since February, while arguing that the new clinics were being introduced across Scotland, including Ayr.
“I've campaigned for one to come to Ayr and I know what a difference this will make to people here to be able to access medical care at a time that suits them.”
Her comments were made in response to the announcement by First Minister John Swinney, who confirmed the latest expansion of the scheme.
What happens next
The Ayr service is not yet described as operational. The next stage is the development of proposals, and further details will be needed on its location, launch date and the practical arrangements for local patients.
The walk-in model is being presented as an additional route to same-day care. Its stated purpose is both to provide patients with access to clinicians outside standard appointment times and to reduce pressure on established GP practices and hospital emergency departments.
