Plans to extend Creggan Bahn Court on Seafield Road in Ayr have been approved, allowing the care home’s operators to create six additional en-suite bedrooms in former garage and storage accommodation.
The application submitted to South Ayrshire Council sought permission for a change of use and alterations to the existing garages. The approved work will also provide associated living and staff-room accommodation, alongside an extension to the care home.
What the approved work includes
Drawings submitted with the application show six en-suite bedrooms being formed within the former garage and storage building. The proposals also include alterations to create new French doors and the infilling of an overhang on the southern elevation.
A timber shed currently on the site is due to be removed. It will be replaced by a new extension on the same proportions as the existing building. The replacement structure will accommodate a staff room and a residents’ lounge.
A covered walkway is also planned to connect the new annex accommodation with the main care home building.
Background to the Seafield Road site
The main Creggan Bahn Court building has been altered and extended several times over the years. A single-storey, detached and elongated outbuilding sits in the north-western corner of the site, beside a neighbouring timber shed.
The outbuilding is understood to have been built by the previous owner-operator of the premises for use as garage and storage accommodation. The approved plans will adapt that space for care-home use rather than leaving it in its former function.
Council’s reason for approval
South Ayrshire Council officials said the proposal would continue the established use of the premises while providing additional accommodation. In their assessment, the expansion would support the care home as a community facility in a location accessible to residents, visitors, staff and professionals attending the site.
“The proposals represent a continuation of the existing and established use of the premises, with the proposed modest increase in accommodation providing an expanded community facility, in an accessible and sustainable location for not only residents, but also visitors, and those employed in, or professionals visiting the facility.”
The decision means Creggan Bahn Court can now progress with the approved conversion and building works at its Seafield Road premises. The source does not state when construction will begin or when the additional bedrooms and facilities are expected to open.
