A care service in Ayr has been praised after inspectors found that people using it were becoming more confident and independent. Homelife Ayr, on Viewfield Road, received a “very good” rating following an unannounced Care Inspectorate inspection.

The service is operated by Quarriers and provides housing support and care at home for adults across South Ayrshire who have learning disabilities, physical disabilities or mental health needs.

What inspectors found

The inspection took place over three days, from August 25 to 27, and included interviews with people using the service, relatives, staff and managers. Inspectors also observed daily practice.

The report found that people supported by Homelife Ayr were achieving positive outcomes and living more independently. Inspectors highlighted the service’s promotion of independence, choice and control as a key strength.

People were supported to take part in education, employment and social activities, while also maintaining important relationships in their communities. Staff were also found to respond promptly when people’s health or wellbeing changed and helped them access appropriate healthcare.

Families praise caring and flexible staff

People receiving support and their families described staff as “caring, flexible, and responsive”. Inspectors said support was built on trusting relationships and a detailed understanding of each person’s needs.

“They've helped me become so much more confident and independent.”

One person using the service also described the staff as “absolutely fantastic”. A relative said the service had helped their son become “a more confident person and has a more enjoyable life as a result”.

Safety and support systems

The Care Inspectorate said effective care planning, medication management, financial safeguards and management oversight contributed to safe and reliable support.

Medication systems were described as well organised and regularly audited. Staff competence was assessed regularly, while financial support was covered by robust safeguards and clear auditing processes.

Homelife Ayr had no upheld complaints since its previous inspection. The Care Inspectorate concluded that people using the service experienced “high-quality, person-centred support” which improved their health, confidence and independence.

The service is managed by a project manager, supported by three team leaders and a wider team of support staff.
