An Irvine ultra runner has completed a gruelling 100-mile race while raising money for a children’s charity based near Ayr.

Levi Charlton, 53, completed the Snowdonia 100-mile race as part of an endurance challenge supporting Whiteleys Retreat. The British Gas worker has raised £1,630 so far, with £500 in matched funds taking the total to £2,130 towards his £2,500 target.

A series of extreme endurance challenges

Levi’s latest achievement follows a series of demanding events, including the Yorkshire 3 Peaks, the Devilla 8-Hour Trail, the 50-mile Pennine Way Ultra and the 104-mile Ultra Scotland.

He did not finish the GB Ultra Brecon Beacons 100-mile race, but returned to form in August by completing the Dunoon 33-mile Ultra before taking on and completing the Snowdonia event.

“£1,630 raised so far for Whiteleys Retreat and with £500 in matched funds, it takes me closer to the target of £2,500.”

He added: “I'm very humbled by the generous donations throughout the year and would love to see it continue as we move towards the final months.”

Inspired by visit to Alloway respite centre

Charlton was inspired to support Whiteleys Retreat after visiting its respite centre in Alloway.

“When you go down and visit them it's heartbreaking, which is why I wanted to take on these races for them.”

He has previously raised money for the charity through Fit Ayrshire Dads, but decided to undertake his own fundraising challenge. Charlton said he left the army in 2004 after 15 years and found that running gave him peace of mind.

Having lived in the area for 30 years, he also described the local scenery as a major part of the appeal of running.
