Hundreds of runners have completed a demanding 40-mile trail across Ayrshire, finishing at Riverside Stadium in Ayr after battling damp weekend weather.
The River Ayr Way Ultra Marathon returned for its 20th anniversary, taking competitors from Glenbuck Loch near Muirkirk through the Ayrshire countryside and into Ayr. Despite the wet conditions, organisers reported that the event was marked by smiles and good times.
A three-stage route through Ayrshire
The ultra marathon was divided into three sections. The first covered 17 miles from Glenbuck to Sorn, followed by a 14-mile stretch from Sorn to Annbank. The final section took runners the remaining nine miles from Annbank to Ayr.
Support was provided along the course, with fruit, cold drinks and a warm reception waiting for competitors at every 10-mile checkpoint. Water stations were also positioned at every five-mile marker.
Volunteers thanked for supporting the race
Organisers thanked the numerous volunteers stationed throughout the trail and everyone else who helped make the anniversary race possible.
