Photographs from South Ayrshire in September 2006 have been brought back into focus by the Ayr Advertiser, offering a snapshot of schools, sport, healthcare and family events from the time.
Among the archive images are the 2006 captains and vice captains at Marr College. The pupils identified were Kenzi Sharkey, Frazer Aitken, Euan Brown, Kathryn Rae, Adam McCabe and Sarah Melville.
Community life and sporting success
Ayr Hospital also featured in the collection, with photographs from a 2006 fun day organised for health staff and their families. NHS Ayrshire & Arran arranged the event to thank employees for their hard work during the previous year. Hoop-la was among the activities shown in the images.
The archive also records the success of young Ayr Seaforth athlete Caitlan Gillon at the Pitreavie Trophy meeting in September that year. She won three Under 11 trophies: the 77m, 150m and long jump. The source caption refers to her as “Caitlyn” in one place and “Caitlan” in another.
Schools and clubs in the spotlight
Sporting memories also include Hazel Gow and Julie Blackwood of Prestwick Tennis Club, who secured the girls’ Under 18 doubles title at the 2016 Moffat Junior Open. The reference to 2016 appears in the supplied archive material, although the wider feature looks back to 2006.
Other photographs show pupils at Dailly Primary enjoying comics and magazines during a reading session when the newspaper’s photographer visited. At Newton Primary, children in the infant department met television puppet Sooty during a visit in February 2006. Sooty was accompanied by Donald McLarty of the Royal National Institute for the Blind.
Together, the images revisit everyday moments and achievements recorded across South Ayrshire’s schools, workplaces, clubs and families.
