Demolition of the former Arran Mall site in Ayr has been pushed back to the end of September, with South Ayrshire Council saying the work has taken slightly longer than expected.
The project involves the removal of a three-storey concrete office block on Alloway Street, together with the single-storey mall and retail units behind it. Work began in February and is being carried out by Dem-Master Demolition Ltd.
What is happening at the site
The demolition was originally scheduled to take approximately six months. South Ayrshire Council has now confirmed that the completion date has moved to the end of September.
A council spokesperson said: “We expect the demolition of Arran Mall to be complete by the end of September. This has taken slightly longer than initially anticipated, which is not unusual for this type of work.”
Secure hoarding has been installed around the site during the works. Existing access from Dalblair Road to neighbouring properties has been maintained, while access to the car park at the Kyle Centre has also remained available.
Background to the former mall site
South Ayrshire Council had previously bought the former mall, alongside the Hourstons building, with plans to develop a “Living Well Village”. Those plans were scrapped late last year after funding for the project could not be secured.
The latest update concerns the demolition programme rather than a replacement development. The council has not stated in the supplied update what future use will be made of the site following the demolition.
For people living near Alloway Street, the practical information currently confirmed is that hoarding remains around the demolition area, access from Dalblair Road to neighbouring properties is being maintained and the Kyle Centre car park remains accessible. Completion is expected by the end of September, subject to the revised timetable.
